Het woord ‘carnaval’ lijkt een aanknopingspunt te bieden maar blijft hier zonder figuratieve uitwerking. Het carnavaleske schuilt in de vrije expressie, in het louter schilderkunstige spel van vooral onvermengde kleurpigmenten. Toen Schmalzigaug dit werk maakte, correspondeerde hij met de futuristische voorman Umberto Boccioni. In zijn brieven begon hij zijn persoonlijke en coloristische variant van het modernisme voor het eerst te definiëren. Zo schreef hij: ‘Ik leef in het midden van een prisma. En het resultaat van deze hypnose van kleur? Iets vleselijks, een rilling in de onderbuik – een testiculaire emotie. Waarom? Het instinct van het carnaval (…)’. Twee jaren eerder, in 1912, had de schilder tijdens het Parijse Salon des Indépendants ongetwijfeld het abstracte sleutelwerk Amorpha: Fugue en deux couleurs (1912) van de Tsjechische kunstenaar František Kupka gezien. Door in Ontwikkeling van een thema in rood met de achterkant van de verfborstel of met het paletmes blauwe, rode en gele verf weg te krassen, brutaliseerde Schmalzigaug de abstracte schilderkunst die hij kende. Dit lijkt wel een anachronistisch schilderij van abstract expressionistische makelij. Om die reden is het niet alleen het meest enigmatische, maar ook het meest atypische werk in het oeuvre van de kunstenaar. Nadien heeft Schmalzigaug nooit meer een schilderij in dezelfde trant gemaakt. Dit neemt niet weg dat de conceptuele schilderkunstige vernieuwing, in de geest van de avant-garde, onmiskenbaar aanwezig is. Een schilderkunstige compositie kan kleur pur sang zijn. In april en mei 1914 werd dit werk in Rome tentoongesteld tijdens de Esposizione libera futurista internazionale in de avant-gardegalerie van Giuseppe Sprovieri. Het maakte deel uit van een door de kunstenaar zelf gekozen ensemble van zes werken. Bij leven was deze tentoonstelling het artistieke hoogtepunt van de jonggestorven Schmalzigaug. Zijn werken werden in het toonaangevende avant-gardetijdschrift Lacerba omschreven als ‘ritmes van gekleurde arabesken’. Eind 1914 verliet Schmalzigaug Venetië onder druk van de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Dit schilderij bleef samen met verschillende andere werken achter en bleef voor meer dan een eeuw verborgen in Italiaanse en later Zwitserse privécollecties. Pas in 2015 dook het opnieuw op tijdens een veiling in Zwitserland. In 2021 voegde het KMSKA het werk toe aan zijn collectie, dankzij middelen van de Vlaamse Topstukkenraad. Développement d’un thème en rouge : Carnaval est connu comme le premier tableau purement abstrait dans l’histoire de la peinture belge. Le mot carnaval semble donner une indication mais ne prend pas de forme figurative sur la toile. Le carnavalesque réside ici dans l’expression libre, dans le jeu purement pictural de pigments non mélangés. Lorsque Schmalzigaug réalise cette toile, il tient une correspondance suivie avec Umberto Boccioni, tête de proue du futurisme. C’est dans ces lettres qu’il commence à définir sa conception coloriste du modernisme. Il écrit par exemple : "Je vis au milieu d’un prisme. Le résultat de cette hypnose de la couleur ? Quelque chose de charnel, une vibration dans le bas-ventre, une émotion testiculaire. Pourquoi ? L’instinct du carnaval (…)". Deux ans plus tôt, en 1912, le peintre a certainement vu au Salon des Indépendants de Paris l’œuvre-clé de l’art abstrait Amorpha : Fugue en deux couleurs (1912) du Tchèque František Kupka. Dans Développement d’un thème en rouge, Schmalzigaug met à mal l’art abstrait en grattant la peinture bleue, rouge et jaune avec le dos de la brosse ou à la palette. Cela ressemble à un tableau anachronique de facture expressionniste abstraite. C’est dans ce sens non seulement l’œuvre la plus énigmatique, mais aussi la plus atypique de l’artiste. Schmalzigaug ne peindra plus jamais dans la même veine. Cela n’enlève rien à la présence incontestable de la nouveauté conceptuelle, dans l’esprit de l’avant-garde. Une composition picturale peut être de la couleur en essence. La toile figure en avril et mai 1914 à la Esposizione libera futurista internazionale montée à Rome par le galeriste d’avant-garde Giuseppe Sprovieri. Elle fait partie d’un ensemble de six œuvres choisies par le peintre lui-même. C’est le point d’orgue artistique de Schmalzigaug, mort à un jeune âge. Ses œuvres sont décrites dans la revue artistique d’avant-garde Lacerba comme des ‘rythmes d’arabesques colorées’. Fin 1914, Schmalzigaug quitte Venise sous la pression de la Première Guerre mondiale. Ce tableau reste dans son atelier avec quelques autres　; ils vont disparaître pendant plus d’un siècle dans des collections privées italiennes, puis suisses. Ce n’est qu’en 2015 que cette toile réapparaît dans une vente publique en Suisse. Le KMSKA en a fait l’acquisition en 2021 grâce aux fonds du Conseil flamand des Œuvres majeures. Development of a theme in red: Carnival is recognised as the first abstract painting in the history of Belgian art. The word ‘Carnival’ appears to offer a clue, but there is no equivalent figure to be seen. The carnivalesque element lies in the free expression, in the sheer painterly interplay of mainly unmixed colour pigments. When Schmalzigaug made this work he was corresponding with the Futurist leader Umberto Boccioni. In his letters he began defining his personal and colouristic variant of modernism for the first time. He wrote, for example: ‘I live in the middle of a prism. And the result of this hypnosis of colour? Something carnal, a trembling in the abdomen – a testicular emotion. Why? By scratching away blue, red and yellow paint with the back of the brush or a palette knife, Schmalzigaug here brutalised the abstract art that he knew. This looks like an anachronistic painting of the Abstract Expressionist kind. That is why it is not just the most enigmatic work in the artist’s oeuvre, but also his most atypical one. He never again made a painting in the same manner. That does not alter the fact that conceptual painterly innovation in the spirit of the avant-garde is clearly present. A painterly composition can be just plain colour. It was part of an ensemble of six works chosen by the artist himself. Had he lived longer this exhibition would have been the high point of his artistic career. His works were described in the avant-garde journal Lacerba as ‘rhythms of coloured arabesques’. At the end of 1914 the First World War forced Schmalzigaug to leave Venice. He left this and several other paintings behind, and for more than a century it remained hidden away in Italian and later Swiss collections.
