Aan zijn voeten treurt Maria en bidt Johannes, zijn favoriete leerling. Links en rechts van Christus zijn twee misdadigers gekruisigd aan een afgeknotte boom. Een stoet van soldaten trekt terug naar Jeruzalem, de ommuurde stad in de verte. Ze hebben zonet Christus’ zijde doorboord met een lans en de benen van de linkse misdadiger gebroken, zodat hij sneller zou sterven. Golgotha, wat ‘Schedelplaats’ betekent, is in het christelijke denken een belangrijke locatie. Volgens apocriefe tradities was het de begraafplaats van Adam, die verantwoordelijk was voor de zondeval. Christus stierf op diezelfde plaats om zo de mens te verlossen van Adams erfzonde. In het landschap worden enkele details geïnterpreteerd als symbolen die het centrale verhaal kracht bijzetten. Zo worden de schedels met de slang in de voorgrond geassocieerd met zonde en dood, en de uil met het jodendom. Als geheel zou het schilderij dan staan voor Christus’ overwinning op dit alles. Toch is voorzichtigheid geboden. Enerzijds is de betekenis van sommige symbolen verloren gegaan en anderzijds is er gevaar voor overinterpretatie. Over dit paneel is bijvoorbeeld ook geschreven dat de herten, konijnen en bloemen een specifieke betekenis hadden. Het is meer waarschijnlijk dat de schilder ze simpelweg toevoegde om zijn landschap een naturalistisch effect te verlenen. Het schilderij is 1475 gedateerd en gesigneerd door Antonello da Messina, een Italiaanse schilder die afkomstig was uit Messina (Sicilië). Hij behoort tot de Italiaanse renaissance, maar zijn stijl wordt geassocieerd met de kunst uit het Noorden. Antonello was in Italië een van de pioniers van het schilderen met olieverf, de techniek die Jan van Eyck op scherp stelde. Er wordt verondersteld dat Antonello het medium adopteerde onder zijn invloed. Mogelijk zag hij schilderijen van Van Eyck tijdens zijn verblijf in Napels of Venetië. In de vroegmoderne periode werd Italië toonaangevend voor de kunsten in Europa. Kunstenaars uit de Lage Landen reisden vanaf de 16de eeuw zuidwaarts om er de kunst van de klassieke oudheid en de renaissance te bestuderen. In het geval van Antonello en Van Eyck is er sprake van invloed in de omgekeerde richting. Olieverf bood schilders meer mogelijkheden dan tempera, een verf op basis van eiwit die courant was in 15de-eeuws Italië. Zo zijn de kleuren veel helderder, wat na de restauratie in 2007 duidelijk waarneembaar werd in deze Calvarie. De subtiele kleur- en toonverschillen waarmee Antonello een gevoel van ruimte creëerde zijn bewonderenswaardig. Met olieverf kan een schilder bovendien ook zachte overgangen maken tussen licht en donker. Antonello benutte deze eigenschap bijvoorbeeld in de schaduwpartijen van de lichamen van Christus en de misdadigers. Er is niets geweten over de originele context van het werk. Het kleine formaat suggereert dat het dienstdeed als devotiestuk in een privécontext, eerder dan als altaarstuk. Antonello maakte meerdere van deze verfijnde voorstellingen op klein formaat van de kruisdood van Christus. Een van de paneeltjes wordt bewaard in de National Gallery in Londen (Inv. NG1166). De Calvarie kwam in 1841 in het KMSKA terecht via Florent van Ertborn. Het is een van de weinige Italiaanse werken in de collectie en het enige werk van Antonello in België. Une ligne de soldats retourne à Jérusalem, la ville fortifiée au loin. Ils viennent de transpercer le flanc du Christ d’une lance et ont cassé les jambes du larron de gauche pour qu’il meurt plus vite. Le Golgotha, qui signifie ‘lieu des crânes’, est un site important dans la foi chrétienne. Selon les traditions apocryphes, c’était le lieu de sépulture d’Adam, par qui le Déluge est arrivé. Le Christ meurt au même endroit pour délivrer l’humanité du péché originel. Certains détails du paysage sont interprétés comme des symboles en exergue de la scène centrale. Les crânes au serpent au premier plan sont associés au péché et à la mort, le hibou à l’hébraïsme. Le tableau dans son ensemble représente le Christ surmontant toutes ces épreuves. La prudence est toutefois de mise car d’une part, certains symboles ont perdu leur sens et, de l’autre, une surinterprétation n’est pas sans danger. Il a par exemple été écrit à propos de ce panneau que les cerfs, les lapins et les fleurs avaient un sens spécifique. Il est plus que probable qu’ils aient été ajoutés tout simplement pour donner au paysage un effet naturaliste. Le tableau est daté de 1475 et signé par Antonello da Messina, un peintre italien originaire de Messine, en Sicile. Il appartient à la Renaissance italienne, mais son style est associé à l’art des pays du Nord. Antonello fut en Italie un pionnier de la peinture à l’huile, la technique mise au point par Jan van Eyck. L’art italien donne le ton partout en Europe dans les premiers temps de la période moderne. Des artistes des Pays-Bas se sont rendus en Italie dès le 16e siècle pour étudier l’Antiquité et la Renaissance. Mais dans le cas d’Antonello et Van Eyck, l’influence s’est exercée en sens inverse. La peinture à l’huile offrait davantage de possibilité que la détrempe, une peinture à base de blanc d’œuf courant en Italie au 15e siècle. Les couleurs étaient beaucoup plus pures, ce qui est devenu apparent après la restauration de ce Calvaire en 2007. Les teintes subtiles avec lesquelles Antonello crée un sentiment d’espace sont admirables. Avec la peinture à l’huile, le peintre peut en outre obtenir des transitions douces entre la lumière et l’obscurité. Antonello met par exemple cette propriété à profit pour les ombres sur les corps du Christ et des larrons. On ignore tout du contexte de création de cette œuvre. Le petit format laisse à penser qu’elle servait de pièce de dévotion dans une sphère privée plutôt que comme retable. Antonello a à son actif plusieurs de ces représentations de la Crucifixion en petit format. Un de ces panneaux est conservé à la National Gallery de Londres (Inv. NG1166). Le Calvaire est entré dans la collection du KMSKA en 1841 grâce à Florent van Ertborn. C’est une des rares œuvres italiennes que possède le musée et la seule d’Antonello en Belgique. A cavalcade of soldiers is returning to Jerusalem, the walled city in the distance. They have just pierced Christ’s side with a lance and broken the legs of the thief on the left so as to hasten his death. Golgotha, which means ‘the place of a skull’, is an important place to Christians. According to apocryphal traditions it was the burial pace of Adam, who was responsible for the Fall of Man. Christ died on the same spot in order to redeem mankind from that Original Sin. Several of the details in the landscape are interpreted as symbols that reinforce the central story. The skulls and snake in the foreground are associated with sin and death, and the owl with Judaism. The painting as a whole stands for Christ’s ultimate triumph of them. Yet one has to be careful. On the one hand the meaning of some of the symbols has been lost in the mists of time, and at the same time there is the danger of overinterpretation. For example, it has been said that the deer, rabbits and flowers in the panel had a specific meaning, but it is more likely that the artist simply added them to make his landscape look more naturalistic. The painting was signed and dated 1475 by Antonello da Messina, an Italian painter from Messina in Sicily. He was part of the Italian Renaissance, but his style is associated with the north of Italy. He was one of the pioneers of oil painting, the technique that Jan van Eyck brought to fruition, and it is assumed that Antonello adopted the new medium under Van Eyck’s influence. He may have seen paintings by the Netherlandish master during his time in Naples or Venice. Italy was the trendsetter for European art in the Early Modern period. Starting in the 16th century, artists from the Low Countries headed south to study the art of classical antiquity and the Renaissance. In the case of Antonello and Van Eyck that influence was reversed. Oil paint gave artists greater flexibility than tempera, a paint based on the white of eggs that was customary in Italy. Oil colours are much brighter, as could clearly be seen in this Calvary after its conservation in 2007. The subtle differences in colour and tone with which Antonello created a sense of spaciousness are remarkable. In addition, oil paint enables an artist to make smooth transitions between light and shade, a technique that Antonello employed in the shaded passages of the bodies of Christ and the two thieves. Nothing is known about the original context of this work. Its small size suggests that it served as an aid to private devotions rather than being used as an altarpiece. Antonello made several such small, refined scenes of the Crucifixion. One of them is in the National Gallery in London (inv. no. NG1166).
