Het kind slaat zijn ene arm om haar nek en houdt in zijn andere hand een gebedssnoer vast. Maria staat voor een luxueus erekleed dat is versierd met brokaten van plantmotieven en voorstellingen van dieren. Twee engelen met bonte vleugels houden het vast. Er groeit een variëteit aan bloemen, zoals meiklokjes, rozen en irissen. Op de voorgrond staat een metalen fontein met daarop een leeuw. Die staat symbool voor Maria, die werd bezongen als ‘een bron’ in Bijbelse teksten, zoals in het Hooglied (4, 15). De houten lijst maakt deel uit van het schilderij, zoals vaker bij laatmiddeleeuwse panelen. Van Eyck beschilderde die lijst met een marmerpatroon. Onderaan staan een datum en een signatuur. De schilder voegde ook zijn persoonlijke spreuk toe: ‘Als ik kan’. Die is afgeleid van de gangbare formule ‘zoals ik kan, niet zoals ik zou willen’. Enerzijds gaf Van Eyck hiermee aan dat hij trots was op zijn werk (hij schilderde het zo goed als hij kon), anderzijds legde hij ook een zekere bescheidenheid aan de dag (hij erkende de grenzen van zijn kunnen). De meeste kunstenaars in de late middeleeuwen zagen zichzelf als ambachtslui en signeerden hun werk niet. Van Eyck was een zelfbewuste kunstenaar, zoals dat later in de renaissance de norm werd. Het kleine formaat suggereert dat dit een werk was voor privédevotie, waar de eigenaar thuis voor bad. Mogelijk was ooit ook de achterzijde beschilderd. Het paneel heeft namelijk een ongelijke dikte, wat erop kan wijzen dat het op een later tijdstip doormidden gezaagd werd. Er is echter nooit melding gemaakt van de beschilderde achterkant. Van Eyck voltooide deze Madonna bij de Fontein in 1439, twee jaar voor zijn dood. Het is onduidelijk wie de bestemmeling was. De vroegste verifieerbare bewaarplaats van het werk is het Oost-Vlaamse dorp Dikkelvenne (Gavere). Indien het schilderij daar sinds de 15de eeuw was, behoorde het mogelijk oorspronkelijk toe aan Simon Borluut. Die bezat sinds 1437 het Hof te Boekhoute in Dikkelvenne en was de schoonbroer van Joos Vijdt, de opdrachtgever van Het Lam Gods. Via die weg kan hij in contact gekomen zijn met Van Eyck. Er bestaan veel versies van de compositie, waaronder enkele oude kopieën. Mogelijk werd een daarvan vermeld in de inventarissen van de collectie van Margareta van Oostenrijk (1516 en 1523), landvoogdes van de Nederlanden. Daarin wordt de compositie van Madonna bij de fontein beschreven, maar de naam van de kunstenaar blijft er onvermeld. Omdat dit in andere gevallen wel gebeurde en het schilderij van Van Eyck duidelijk gesigneerd is, gaat het hier waarschijnlijk om een latere versie. Van Eyck verwierf over heel Europa faam. Hij verfijnde de techniek van de olieverf, wat hem toeliet om zachte overgangen en ongeziene kleur- en toonnuances aan te brengen. Hierdoor sorteren zijn schilderijen een zeer naturalistisch effect. In deze Madonna bij de fontein is dat bijvoorbeeld goed te zien in het spel van licht en reflectie bij de fontein. Au centre de ce petit panneau, Marie serre tendrement Jésus dans ses bras. L’Enfant a un bras autour de son cou et tient un chapelet dans l’autre main. Marie est debout devant une riche tapisserie rehaussée de brocards à motifs végétaux et animaux et tenue par deux anges aux ailes bordées de fourrure. Derrière la tapisserie, une luxuriance de fleurs comme le muguet, les roses et les iris, au premier plan à gauche une fontaine en métal surplombée d’un lion. Cette fontaine symbolise la Vierge, louée comme une ‘source’ dans les textes bibliques comme le Cantique des Cantiques (4, 15). Le cadre en bois fait partie intégrante du tableau, comme c’est souvent le cas sur les panneaux médiévaux. Van Eyck a décoré le cadre d’un motif de marbre et y apposé une date et une signature en bas. Le peintre a également ajouté sa devise personnelle ‘Comme je peux’, allusion à la formule ‘comme je peux, non comme je veux’. Van Eyck indique ainsi qu’il est fier de son travail (il peint aussi bien qu’il peut) tout en affichant une certaine modestie (il connaît les limites de son art). La plupart des artistes du bas Moyen-Âge se considèrent comme des artisans et ne signent pas leurs œuvres. Van Eyck se considère comme un artiste à part entière, comme ce sera le cas pour les artistes de la Renaissance. Le petit format suggère que cette œuvre est destinée à la dévotion privée. Il est aussi possible que le dos du panneau ait également été peint. Le panneau a en effet une épaisseur inégale, ce qui tendrait à prouver qu’il a été coupé au milieu à une date ultérieure. Il n’y a néanmoins aucune mention d’une peinture au dos du panneau. Van Eyck achève cette Vierge à la fontaine en 1439, deux ans avant sa mort. Il n’est pas clair à qui le panneau était destiné. Son premier lieu de conservation identifié est le village de Flandre orientale de Dikkelvenne (Gavere). Si le tableau s’y trouve à partir du 15e siècle, il a peut-être appartenu à Simon Borluut. Celui-ci possède depuis 1437 le château Boekhoute à Dikkelvenne et est le beau-frère de Joos Vijdt, commanditaire de L’Agneau mystique, par qui il a pu entrer en contact avec Van Eyck. Il existe de nombreuses versions de cette composition, dont quelques copies anciennes. C’est peut-être une d’entre elles qui est mentionnée dans les inventaires de la collection de Marguerite d’Autriche (1516 et 1523), Intendante des Pays-Bas. La composition de la Vierge à la fontaine y est décrite, mais sans mention de l’artiste. Comme l’artiste est généralement cité dans les inventaires et que le tableau de Van Eyck est clairement signé, il s’agit donc probablement d’une version postérieure. Van Eyck est renommé dans toute l’Europe. Il perfectionne la technique de la peinture à l’huile, ce qui lui permet d’obtenir des transitions douces de nuances et des couleurs et des tonalités exceptionnelles. Ses tableaux prennent ainsi un effet très naturaliste. C’est parfaitement visible sur cette Vierge à la fontaine dans le jeu de lumière et de reflet sur la fontaine. The Virgin Mary lovingly cradles the infant Christ at the centre of this small panel. He is curling an arm around her neck and is holding prayer beads in his other hand. The Virgin is standing in front of a luxurious cloth of honour that is decorated with brocaded plant and animal motifs. Two angels with coloured wings are holding it up. The flowers growing in the background include lilies of the valley, roses and irises. Standing in the foreground is a metal fountain with a lion on top. It symbolises the Virgin, who is praised as a ‘fountain’ in biblical texts, such as the Song of Solomon 4:15. The wooden frame is part of the painting, as was often the case with late medieval panels. Van Eyck painted it with a marble pattern. At the bottom there is a date with a signature. He added his personal motto: ‘As I can’, which is derived from the standard formula of ‘As good as I can, not as good as I would wish’. On the one hand Van Eyck stated that he is proud of his work (he painted it as well as he could), but on the other hand he was modest (recognising the limits of his abilities). Most artists in the late Middle Ages regarded themselves as craftsmen and did not sign their work. Van Eyck was a self-assured artist, as became the norm later in the Renaissance. The small size of the picture suggests that it was a work for private devotion, before which the owner prayed at home. The back may also have been painted, for its uneven thickness could indicate that it was sawn down crosswise through the middle at a later date. However, no mention was ever made of a painted reverse in documents. Van Eyck completed this Madonna at the fountain in 1439, two years before his death. It is not clear for whom it was made. Its earliest verifiable location was in the East Flanders village of Dikkelvenne, near Galere. If it had been there since the 15th century it may originally have belonged to Simon Borluut. He had owned the Hof te Boekhoute in Dikkelvenne since 1437, and was the brother-in-law of Joos Vijdt, who commissioned The Ghent altarpiece from Van Eyck, which is how Borluut could have gotten in touch with the artist. There are many versions of the composition, some of which are early copies. One of them is perhaps mentioned in the inventories of the collection of Margaret of Austria (1516 and 1522), Governor of the Netherlands. It gives a description of the composition, but the name of the artist is not mentioned. Since names were recorded for other works in the inventory and Van Eyck’s original is clearly signed, the painting with Margaret was probably a later version. Van Eyck was famed throughout Europe. He refined the technique of oil painting, which enabled him to make gradual transitions and unseen nuances in colour and tone, which give his paintings a very naturalistic look.
